Calling all artists! "dia de los muertos" show in Santa Barbara

Would you like a chance to display your "day of the dead" artwork at the very cool "Elsies" (beer and wine bar that has several art shows a year... great venue, at least some artwork is always sold) in Santa Barbara?

I've got a one man show coming up and I just don't have enough artwork to fill the two rooms.

Opening night Thursday Nov. 1st ... I'll hang all the artwork and supply beer, wine, and "dia de los muertos" related food.

You just have to supply high quality artwork with a "DOTH" theme

It will be a blast and there is a good chance your artwork will be sold

Contact "Starpower" via tribe or call me >>> Mark at 805 450 8340

Thanks!

Bringing Dia de los Muertos to Burning Man

I've always been a big fan of the holiday here in Arizona and participated in local celebrations, especially the annual All Souls Procession in Tucson. This is my fourth year going to Burning Man, and I thought this year I would finally do something I'd been thinking about for years - a Dia de los Muertos theme camp. We're calling it Fiesta de los Muertos (the same name as a Day of the Dead/Halloween party I've been doing for the last few years).

If you are coming to Burning Man this year, please be sure to look us up. We're placed at 7:30 and Intertidal. We're starting out small this year, just a geodesic dome decorated Dia de los Muertos style, with an ofrenda and some information about the holiday, as well as a small lounge space (shade during the day, warmth at night).

We will be offering some workshops in Dia de los Muertos arts and crafts Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday at 3 pm, and staging a Day of the Dead parade on Thursday night at 8 pm, with face painting before the parade at 6 and an afterparty at 10. We would love it if you would come and say hi or participate in any of the events, especially the parade.

The bare bones of a site are here...I will be updating it soon... http://www.fiestadelosmuertos.com

Much Mucho Dinero!!!!!!!!!!!!

YOU KNOW THAT YOU SPEND AT LEAST $6.00 "EVERY PAY
PERIOD" ON USELESS STUFF, ME TOO. SO I THOUGHT, WHAT THE HECK, I'M GOING TO TRY ONE OF THESE "SCAMS". NOW TO MY AMAZEMENT, I AM CHUCKLING ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK WEEK AFTER WEEK WITH My PILES OF 1$ BILLS. I AM HAVING FUN AT THE SAME TIME AND WISHING THAT I WOULD HAVE DONE THIS SOONER! THIS IS LONG, SO IF YOU DON'T WANT TO READ IT ALL NOW, JUST "COPY AND PASTE", IT IS
SOOO WORTH IT! DON'T TAKE MY WORD FOR IT, JUST TRY IT!
How to turn $6 into $6,000!
READING THIS COULD CHANGE YOUR LIFE! SO JUST DO IT! This really works!
Hello, I’m like a lot of others out there who have
financial woes and I decided to try something new. If it works for me then I will be able to get myself out of a very difficult financial situation. Please read and see what results another got, it's pretty exciting!
It REALLY CAN MAKE YOU EASY MONEY!! IT WORKS!!!
BUT YOU HAVE TO FOLLOW IT TO THE LETTER FOR IT TO WORK!!!!
I found this on a bulletin board and decided to try it. A little while back, I was browsing through newsgroups and came across an article similar to this that said you could make thousands of dollars within weeks with
only an initial investment of $6.00! So I thought,
"Yeah right, this must be a scam", but like most of us, I was curious, so I kept reading. Anyway, it said that you send $1.00 to each of the 6 names and address stated in the article. You then place your own name and address in the bottom of the list at #6, and post the article in at least 200 newsgroups. (There are thousands)
No catch, that was it. So after thinking it over, and talking to a few people first, I thought about trying it. I figured: "what have I got to lose except 6 stamps and $6.00, right?" Then I invested the measly $6.00. Well GUESS WHAT!!... Within 7 days, I started getting money in the mail! I was shocked! I figured it would end soon, but the money just kept coming in. In my first week, I made about $25.00. By the end of the second week I had made a total of over $1,000.00! In the third week I had over $10,000.00 and it's still growing. This is now my fourth week and I have made a total of just over $42,000.00 and it's still coming in rapidly. It's certainly worth $6.00, and 6 stamps, I have spent more than that on the!! Let me tell you how this works and most importantly, why it works.... Also, make sure you print a copy of this article NOW, so you can get the information off of it as you need it. I promise you that if you follow the directions exactly, that you will start making more money than you thought possible by doing something
so easy!
Suggestion: Read this entire message carefully!
(Print it out or download it.)
Follow the simple directions and watch the money
come in! It's easy. It's legal. And, your investment is only $6.00 (Plus postage)
IMPORTANT: This is not indecent; it is not illegal; and it is virtually no risk - it really works!!!! If all of the following instructions are adhered to, you will receive extraordinary dividends. PLEASE NOTE: Please follow these directions EXACTLY, and $50,000 or more can be yours in 20 to 60 days. This program remains successful because of the honesty and integrity of the participants. Please continue its success by carefully adhering to the instructions. You will now become part of the Mail Order business.
In this business your product is not solid and tangible, it's a service. You are in the business of developing Mailing Lists. Many large corporations are happy to pay big bucks for quality lists. however, the money made from the mailing lists is secondary to the income, which is made from people like you and me asking to
be included in that list.
Here are the 3 easy steps to success:
STEP 1: Get 6 separate pieces of paper and write the following on each piece of paper
"PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR MAILING LIST."
Now get 6 US $1.00 bills and place ONE inside EACH of the 6 pieces of paper so the bill will not be seen through the envelope (to prevent thievery). Next, place one paper in each of the 6 envelopes and seal them. You should now have 6 sealed envelopes, each with a piece of paper stating the above phrase, your name and address, and a $1.00 bill. What you are doing is creating a service. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY LEGAL! You are requesting a legitimate service and you are paying
for it! Like most of us I was a little skeptical and a little worried about the legal aspects of it all. So I checked it out with the U.S. Post Office (1-800-725-2161) and they confirmed that it is indeed legal! Mail the 6 envelopes to the following addresses:
#1) D.Blakeman 7400 Glenleaf #179 Shreveport, LA 71129
#2) J.maxey 355 N. Manilla, Fresno, CA. 93727
#3) C. Lyons P.O. Box 69645 Los Angeles, CA. 90069-0645
#4) RJ K. Murpay 850 E. Walnut #173 Grapevine, Tx 76051
#5) Candice Messinger 5216 Old Powell rd. Holly Springs, NC 27540
#6) Tim DeMeerleer 105 N. Main st.Rear Kennett, MO 63857
STEP 2: Now take the #1 name off the list that you see above, move the other names up (6 becomes 5, 5 becomes 4, etc.) and add YOUR Name as number 6 on the list.
STEP 3: Change anything you need to, but try to keep this article as close to original as possible. Now, post your amended article to at least 200 newsgroups. (I think there are close to 24,000 groups)All you need is 200, but remember, the more you post, the more money you make!
This is perfectly legal! If you have any doubts, refer to Title 18 Sec. 1302 & 1341 of the Postal laws. Keep a copy of these steps for yourself and, whenever you need money, you can use it again, and again. PLEASE REMEMBER that this program remains successful because of the honesty and integrity of the participants and by their carefully adhering to the directions. Look at
it this way. If you are of integrity, the program will continue and the money that so many others have received will come your way.
NOTE: You may want to retain every name and address sent to you, either on a computer or hard copy and keep the notes people send you. This VERIFIES that you are truly providing a service.
(Also, it might be a good idea to wrap the $1 bill in dark paper to reduce the risk of mail theft.)
So, as each post is downloaded and the directions
carefully followed, six members will be reimbursed for their participation as a List Developer with one dollar each. Your name will move up the list geometrically so that when your
name reaches the #1 position you will be receiving thousands of dollars in CASH!!! What an opportunity for only $6.00 ($1.00 for each of the first six people listed above)
Send it now, add your own name to the list and you're in business!
---DIRECTIONS -----
FOR HOW TO POST TO NEWSGROUPS
Step 1) You do not need to re-type this entire letter to do your own posting. Simply put your cursor at the beginning of this letter and drag your cursor to the bottom of this document, and select 'copy' from the edit menu. This will copy the entire letter into the computer’s memory.

Step 2) Open a blank 'notepad' file and place your cursor at the top of the blank page. From the 'edit' menu select 'paste'. This will paste a copy of the letter into notepad so that you can
add your name to the list.
Step 3) Save your new notepad file as a .txt file. If you want to do your postings in different settings, you'll always have this file to go back to.
Step 4) Use Netscape or Internet explorer and try searching for various newsgroups (on-line forums, message boards, chat sites, discussions.)
Step 5) Visit these message boards and post this article as a new message by highlighting the text of this letter and selecting paste from the edit menu. Fill in the Subject, this will be the
header that everyone sees as they scroll through the list of postings in a particular group, click the post message button. You're done with your first one!
Congratulations...THAT'S IT! All you have to do is jump to different newsgroups and post away, after you get the hang of it, it will take about 30 seconds for each newsgroup!
**REMEMBER, THE MORE NEWSGROUPS YOU POST IN, THE MORE MONEY YOU WILL MAKE!! BUT YOU HAVE TO POST A MINIMUM OF 200**
That's it! You will begin receiving money from around the world within days! You may eventually want to rent a P.O.Box due to the large amount of mail you will receive. If you wish to stay anonymous, you can invent a name to use, as long as the postman will deliver it.
**JUST MAKE SURE ALL THE ADDRESSES ARE CORRECT. **
HOW IT WORKS:
Out of 200 postings, say I receive only 5 replies (a very low example).
So then I made $5.00 with my name at #6 on the letter. Now, each of the 5 persons who just sent me $1.00 make the MINIMUM 200 postings, each with my name at #5 and only 5 persons respond to each of the original 5, that is another $25.00 for me, now those 25 each make 200 MINIMUM posts with my name at #4 and only 5 replies each, I will bring in an additional $125.00! Now, those 125 persons turn around and post the MINIMUM 200 with my name at #3 and only receive 5 replies each, I will make an additional $625.00! OK, now here is the fun part, each of those 625 persons post a MINIMUM 200 letters with my name at #2 and they each only receive 5 replies, that just made me $3,125.00!!! Those 3,125 persons will all deliver this message to 200 newsgroups with my name at #1 and if still 5 persons per 200 newsgroups react I will receive $15,625,00! With an original investment of only $6.00! AMAZING! When your name is no longer on the list, you just take the
latest posting in the newsgroups, and send out another $6.00 to names on the list, putting your name at number 6 again. And start posting again. The thing to remember is: do you realize that thousands of people all over the world are
joining the Internet and reading these articles everyday? JUST LIKE YOU are now!! So, can you afford $6.00 and see if it really works?? I think so... People have said, "what if the plan is played out and no one sends you the money? So what! What are the chances of that happening when
there are tons of new honest users and new honest people who are joining the Internet and newsgroups everyday and are willing to give it a try? Estimates are at 20,000 to 50,000 new users, every day, with thousands of those joining the actual Internet. Remember, play FAIRLY and HONESTLY and this will really work. God bless you!

Call for Submissions : Dia de los Muertos: Honoring the Dead Across Cultures

Rituals to memorialize and honor the dead exist among cultures throughout the world.
One such ritual, Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, traces its history to the indigenous peoples of Mesoamerica. Dia de los Muertos is a national holiday in Mexico and is observed in numerous countries in the Caribbean, Central and South America as well as the United States, parts of Europe, and the Philippines.

Greetings
I am wondering where to spend the Dia de los Muertos this year. I noticed in the photos section that Tuscon has a parade. I heard that LA also has quite a celebration. I have never had a chance to partake and I would like some input please.
Thanks
Kaya

Commonly depicted as wearing a blue tunic woven with flowers a garland of green feathers and red and yellow flowers and golden earplugs and pendants. Flowers emerge from her mouth symbolizing eloquence. A knife also emerges from her mouth suggesting her ability to h the chatter and lies. A red serpent signifing unbriddled passion emerges from her vagina. Beneath her ocelot throne are marigolds and a skull symbolic of the underworld. Marigolds are still offered to her today and to the dead whom she protects on Dia de los Muertos Day of the Dead. Other sacred symbols are spiders signifing the art of weaving and the interrelatedness of all life and thorns used to pierce the ears and other parts of the body during penance. She is a patron of weavers embroiderers silversmiths sculptors and painters as well as poets. As the patron of poets she is the ruler of those who employ lyrical speech or song aka charms to work magic. She is frequently represented by a deer.

As moderator, I will be forced to review the gallery of Dia de los Muertos and remove all photos in violation of pornography, obscenity, etc before the 2oth...

This sucks, but as I feel the board is more about the connections we can make between people, and photos may be shared in a nuber of ways, it shouldn't discourage the use of the forum for those interested in a dialogue.

If you still wanna show more of yourself, get a Flickr account and we'll have a thread where we can share links...

My apologies...

I participated in the SF Mission event for the first time, and had a good time. I especially liked the alters on display in the park. Here it comes - what I didn't like were the people who just saw it as an opportunity to be like ... "Woo-hoo, a parade, let me dress up to get attention and act like an idiot!" Not that I expected it to be a serious, somber event, but some people just didn't seem to have a clue what it was actually about (it's not about them). Or am I just being too uptight?

Checklist for Altar items?

Please don't jump on me for my lack of knowledge on this.

Okay, I know I'm going to sound really stupid here, but can someone please post a basic list of things that one should put on an altar, and of things that are okay to include? Perhaps include a list of things that one *does not* want to include?

I've never made one before, even though I have thought of doing so. I have a vague idea of what should go on one, but I'd like to get it 'right', if you know what I mean. (I do not wish to accidentally offend anyone living or dead! )

My brain is really sucky, and I often can't remember things unless I have it written down, so I would like to be able to write down a list of things I want to use. I don't want to forget anything, if I can help it.

Your help in this is immensely appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Party Ideas

Hello Folks -

I really enjoy reading and viewing the words and images that folks have been posting in here.

So here is a question/brainstorm need for any/everyone. My partner and I have a Dia de los Muertos party every year. We serve a Mexican Feast, have music, homebrew, sugar skulls and an ofrenda in the basement that we ask people to bring and place on a favorite memory/food/poem/etc. of loved ones that have passed on. This is the "big" event we hold at our home each year.

We don't pretend for this to a traditional celebration - in part because we are a couple of gringos in Seattle - and also because the more research I do over the years, the more aware I am that there is no one way that this is celebrated. So it is a bit of a multi-cultural experience, but hopefully with roots and respect planted firmly in the Mexican tradition. We do hold it on a weekend, so we aren't able to have it on the actual Dia de los Muertos (Rule #1 that we almost always have to break).

What I'm wondering is if people have gone to such a celebration or a celebration not at all like this but that involved people interacting and participating, some with little or no knowledge about the holiday. Were there any games, ideas, ice breakers that helped? We do find that people wander down into the basement and share stories with one another, and I'm a little conflicted about making this a little more...structured/ritualistic. It is a party after all. But I'm hoping to get some ideas from folks on what they have enjoyed in the past.

We get more people each year, and we want to make sure we can make sure the spirit of the holiday gets to all our guests, while we flit about heating up tamales and refilling horchata and taking mounds of stuff to the compost pile.

Thanks in advance for any comments.

Hi all. I'm sure this is kind of a stupid question, and one that's probably been answered in previous threads, but bear with me please.

I've celebrated the Dia every year in L.A., but now that I've transplanted to norcal (i live near santa rosa) i have no idea where to go. Where's the celebration? Help.

Video Ancestors Project

Video Ancestors Project
VIDEO ANCESTRY
The centerpiece of the Ancestry Project involves a multimedia
component, created from still photographs of people, places and
things community members are letting go of, grieving, or
celebrating. In alignment with the spirit of the procession, we will
be seeking funds to take these materials and edit them into a video
presentation to be projected along the procession route. We hope
this remembrance will add depth and meaning to the event for the
participants, connecting us with those we love, and others sharing
similar feelings.

If you would like to participate, come to the Potlucks in September (Tucson AZ)
with photographs that we will scan on location with the upmost care
and add to our digital archive. This is also the year we want to
promote All Souls' as a worldwide event by offering people in other
towns, cities, states, and countries the chance to contribute to the
project. For those outside of Tucson or for the technically
inclined, you can contribute images via email by folowing the
directions below.

CHECK OUT www.allsoulsprocession.org for more information

EMAILING INSTRUCTIONS
1. You can submit more than one image; we encourage it.

2. Digital images must be at a resolution
between 300 and 500 dots per inch.

3. Attach files to an email with the subject, "Video Ancestry
Photographs."

4. Provide some background to the photo: Who's in the picture
(provide full names and general ages as best as possible)? Where was
the photo taken? What is going on in the photo?

5. Provide YOUR full name, age, and where you live (town, state,
country).

6. Send emails to Adam, the Video Ancestry Coordinator:
videoancestry@gmail.com

SOMARTS has a number of events for Day of the Dead.

Several events & rituals with usually very beautiful, deeply spiritual
and political altars. Many interactive, some very simple, some very high tech.

Not to be missed. Some of the most amazing altars I've ever seen in my life last year.

Salem Massachusetts traditionally gets close to one million tourists through the month of Oct. for it's month-long Festival of the Dead.

Some of my artwork will be on display (as well as for sale) at the Terror Fantasy Art Show, which is part of it. Should be a good time!

Hey everyone, I just met this dude last night and we were talking about random stuff and got onto the topic of his traveling around Mexico and stuff, and I asked him about the events in the different areas and asked which was the "best" in his opinion, in terms of the whole concept of the celebration adn everythng, and he said there was a group of islands somewhere [lake??] where the indiginous people still lived, no hotels and the like, and that they celebrated with the most vigor and excitement and stuff... He also said there was a town outside of it that one would stop at to take a ferry to these islands...

Does anyone know the names of either of these places??

Anyone been to the Hollywood Forever Cemetary Day of Dead festival, in Los Angeles?
Have any of you had a shrine there?

It's a weird scene. A mix betweeen sad people with real dead people they are shrining their lives to real artsy shows and displays, preformance art, etc.

I want to have a shrine there this year, it's free to do. You can put on shows, build a shrine, it's good people.

Anyone interesed?

Who are you remembering this season?

Dear ones...

As the harvest season nears and the days near Hallows, I ask you this:

Who do you remember this season, and how will you do so?

I carry the memory of my departed father, and choose to remember him along with my grandfather who passed a couple of years ago in the manner offered to me when the eldest passed first...
Being an entertainer, I will carry the memory physically in the SF and Tuscon processions, in the form of a soldier, along with a group of stilters carrying soldiers from around the world.
If you are in the SF,CA area or Tuscon, AZ area, and would like to share in a moving meditation of sorts, I make this offer...

I am building life sized effigies, to be dressed in the clothes of the deceased, which will them be carried through the procession by their survivors to a final resting place near the altars. Families are encouraged to bring images, flowers, etc, to decorate the resting place.

If this experience moves you to be a part of this project, please contact me directly ASAP, so I may estimate materials for the project.

Regardless of how you choose to remember,
be it a wake or a single candle,
the important part is to remember...
How will you?

I was delighted to find while perusing the holiday section at Big Lots(a chain of discount stores, I've only seen them in the Pacific Northwest) to find some very nice foam skulls for about 5.99. They're relatively realistic and come in either a dull bone or brown-black patina look.

As many of us are not as skilled(or possessed of time) as it might take to create either plaster or traditional sugar skulls for the holiday, I thought this might be a perfect substitute.

I am going to collect as many as I can reasonably make excuses for buying and have a skull painting party around the holiday. If you live near a Big Lots, go scoop 'em up!

If you would like to participate, come to the Potlucks in September
with photographs that we will scan on location with the upmost care
and add to our digital archive.

I'm looking to get a Dia De Los Muertos tattoo. The basic idea will be skulls and flowers. Possibly making it look like an alter. But, I'm having a hard time finding art work that will be transferred to a tattoo nicely. Does anyone have any ideas where I can find some? Or, an actual tattoo that can give me some good ideas?

Thanks for the help.

Hey all,
If you saw the recent tribe icon switch from a lovely skeleton image to a ? , you may wonder why many images were suddenly removed from the gallery. It seems that the artist was offended when I removed a listing misplaced as a topic of discussion, after I went so far as to notify him via PM that it should be resubmitted as a listing.

Sad as this is, I do my best to keep my tribes clean and usable.
If you have found other tribes to be flooded by advertising and OT threads bothersome, you might be grateful for my efforts in keeping these boards directed and purposeful... Or you might not even notice.

I'm live in Eugene, Oregon and have an interest in latino culture... hoping to learn spanish too... hablo un poquito. Is anybody aware of local celebrations this year. Yes, it's only July, but calendars fill up ... and it's important enough that I'd like to throw it out there now. I will follow this with a query to the downtown Catholic Church... they have a Spanish Mass ... and a better awareness as to the pulse of the latino community

Hi all! I'm new to this tribe but am a total Dia de la Muertos junkie since buying my first piece in a gift shop in Savannah a few years ago. I'd love to attend a celebration in the Southeastern US and was wondering if any of you can recommend a southern Day of the Dead celebration in the south that's worth the time/money and is fairly genuine in spirit. I am aware of celebrations in Texas but am in NC and would like to stay closer to home if possible since we would be driving.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

OFRENDA CLASS 101

The Day of the Dead Altar (in Spanish called Ofrenda) is a prehispanic tradition that has integrated with the Catholic Religion
in Mexico to become the celebration it is today. The Mexican Ofrenda is made with great preparation and symbolism.
+The altar consists of three levels or tiers representing the
three stages in life
+The three tier altar is covered with "Papel Picado" of three
important colors PURPLE ( for pain)WHITE ( hope) and PINK
(for celebration)RED(the blood of Jesus or Indigenous blood)
+Four candles on the top tier to represent the four cardinal
points. The light of these candles illuminate the path for the
dead's journey home.
+ The second level you put three sugar skulls to represent
the Holy Trinity.
+ The bottom tier a Large Calavera is placed to represent God
or "the giver of life".
Photgraphs of your beloved dead are placed on the altar,
special foods like tamales and mole turkey and drinks like
tequila, beer or atole(made from corn important Aztec food)
as well as harvested fruits and candies.A MUST for an altar
is WATER: to quench the thirst of the dead after journey
SALT:for seasoning and tequila
BREAD: Pan de Muertos food needed for survival

A bowel of water, soap, towel and comb for spirits to clean up.

COPAL inscense is burned as in ancient Aztec Times. It is the
sap from a Mexican tree and it 's scent attracts the spirits and
draws them home.

Marigolds(Cempasuchil) adorn the altar their bright orange
and gold colors help the dead see the altar(Aztecs called it
the" flower of 400 lives")Their fragrance helps to direct.

Hope this gives you some insight intothe Mexican Day of the Dead Altar. But in US it it all about artistic expression, love, spirituality and fun.So Good Luck with your Ofrenda in November! ADIOS

I lived in Guatemala for a short time and they celebrate Day of the Dead a bit different. No Ofrendas, All the family goes to cemetary for a a picnic, the children fly these enormous colorful kites shaped like wheels. The thought of the Mayans is the kites fly close to heaven and invite the spirits to earth. A dish called "fiambre" is eaten on that day , a fish salad with a bunch of different ingrediants. The marigolds and candles areused.

I love the spirituality, idea's and artwork that surround this day. I've decorated my house with it...and rather like the idea of celebrating a passing, rather than mourning it.

I wanted to show you my altar. As I'm from Germany, I don't want to imitate the original DotD style, but since I visited Mexico I'm a big fan and you can see the inspiration in some of my pieces. Do you like my altar?

Also take a look at my other work. There are also some skeletons.
I have two hand-painted DotD-style tables that I simply can't keep around any longer due to space issues. Pics are posted in my profile on pages 3 & 4 - however, as usual, the digital pics don't do the bright colors justice.

I spent a lot of time and energy painting these tables, and they HAVE been used, but they are still in good, usable condition. I would really like these to go to a good home, to someone who understands and truly appreciates DotD artwork, which is why I'm posting here instead of on Craigslist or elsewhere.

Both tables are wood and very solid. A friend who held on to them for a few months put plastic coverings on the top, intending to protect them; however, they're not removable without damaging the paint. They don't detract from the paintings at all, and in fact, DO protect the tables - but I thought I should let you know, anyway.

Dimensions are as follows:

Coffee table = 24"L x 46"W x 16"H
Red table = 20"L x 28"W x 22"H

I live in Outer Mission/Bernal and don't have a way to deliver them, but we could arrange a good time to pick them up.

But if you like them and you're truly appreciative, they're yours for... oh, I don't know. What's your best offer? Anything cool to trade? I hate to sell them - I put my heart into them and really can't justify a price - but I'd barter for sure.

If nothing else, I could just give them to you if you have a good story - run a kids' program that needs furniture? Converting a warehouse space into communal artist living space? Talk to me.

Thanks, everyone. Feel free to email me directly if you want!

xox,
~Spacegirl

Altars. Will you be making one?

Who will you be honoring, if you do?
What do you put on the alters you have made?

If you are unable to make one, who will you honor in your heart?

I hope to make one this year. I know it may seem silly, but I want to honor a friend's recently departed dog (-some on tribe knew Kelpie-), and another friend's kitty cat. Both lost this year to Cancer. I think I will also honor my dear departed three dogs-Mischief, OshKosh and Navarre. (They all lived to a bit past 13. I miss them all tremendously.) And, I want to honor my friends Neal & Brendan Abernathy. (Father & son.) They were murdered in their home in Hercules, CA, Feb. 19th 1997. (The case remains unsolved.)

had a blast last year, are there any marching (sticks & mallets) drummers out there who would be into getting together and working out a few beats for the procession? I play a tom/timbale rig, and work off & on with a very talented snare player. I have a c.d. of beats for a drum &noise project I was heading up a while back. and I am a member of the extra action marching band, though this is a separate project, not to be confused with EAMB, it deals with a similar style of drumming, which is all the more potent with breaks & changes. especially seeking bass drums.
p.s. there are a few photos of me & my mates from last year in the photo file of this tribe, I am the one in white with skull mask & big poobah hat, and rib cage painted on my drum rig.

Interesting mask essay

http://www.anymask.com/mexwresmas.html

Masks are a very special part of the Mexican culture and recall early hispanic times.

For example; the mighty Aztecs had a very special elite in their society: The “Eagle Knights” (Caballeros Aguila); the highest-class soldiers always respected for their unique braveness and fighting skills. They used to wear a mask and a whole eagle outfit. The mask reflexed their status; it was intimidating and sacred.

Masks are mystical; they show another side of the personality of the person who wears it. In Lucha Libre, the mask gives the “enmascarado” (masked man) a free soul to express himself on the ring. A mask is not just an accessory but also a symbol, an attitude, a cultural icon, an identity for a Luchador. It is like having a second skin that gives you special powers. It gives the Enmascarado’s blood a new essential ingredient and protects him too.

It is a projection of the soul, of the neighborhood and background. It is known as a wrestler’s hood. Sometimes wrestlers wear the same mask generation over generation to honor their predecessors. In Mexican wrestling the most important matches are “mask vs. mask”, when the wrestlers bet their masks upon defeat: After the match, the loser will give away the mask to the winner and therefore, will reveal his real identity to the public. Mexican wrestling masks are great collectibles
