Re: SF community intros
Thu, April 28, 2005 - 12:46 PMCool, I'll go first.
I'm a circus artist and who has had a couple of recent family passings that brought me into a fuller role in the SF Dia de los Muertos procession a few years ago and has inspired me to do so again this year.
If you attended the procession and saw a stilter far and beyond the dancers (who are the true leaders of the procession) carrying an effigy of a man, or if you entered the archways in the park to view a large circular altar with a masked effigy on one side and a skeleton filled and surrounded by marigolds, those are projects I was involved in.
Last year I had a private year,
standing with futures of death
and possibilities of new life.
I attended, but quietly, to feel the community
I had been apart from all summer...
even though Creature and I were on stilts
This year I am organizing a community event in a larger scope, enough so that it may only be limited by availiable materials funds and space allotment for the project at it's final rest.
More later, as it is defined by solid pre-planning.... -

This tribe tends to be fairly silent until after the hippies come home
and wipe the alkali from their eyes... -

Sat, May 7, 2005 - 6:08 PMHey folks,
I used to walk in the procession for fun, then I started to walk out of respect for those who passed. Last year I was too overwhelmed by grief to go but the next day I realized it was a mistake.
Make sure you tell us what your altar is like this year Mr. tm.

Re: SF community intros
Sat, May 7, 2005 - 10:27 PMThe project I'm putting together for this year is an attempt to share the journey I took when remembering my grandfather, and this year I remember my father.
If you have some one to remember who passed from this plane... first off- I'm saddened to hear of your loss too.
You're welcome to join us in physicalizing the nurture and support given in our lives by returning the favor for the departed beloved. It was an intense experience of devotion for me to remember and honor my grandfather by carrying him alone. This year, as my father was most himself among others, I invite others to join me in this simple procession. If you have clothing remaining from them, ideal. If not, something they would have worn given the chance.
Currently we're seeking a 501 (c)3 artist sponsorship for grantwriting purposes, to cover costs of the framework for the body to be dressed and carried in rememberance. Without this we may need to ask a materials fee for each person remembered, which we would rather not have to do. If you could assist this project in securing sponsorship, please contact me directly.

Re: SF community intros
Thu, May 26, 2005 - 9:17 AMGreetings,
I've been attending the procession since I first found out about it a few years ago. About two years ago when a friend died, I started my first personal altar which helped me through alot of grief. I'd like to get involved in more community projects this year but not sure how to go about it.

Thu, May 26, 2005 - 8:57 PMAre you on the Mission Cultural Center mailing list? My friend did an altar there last year. I think they announce a theme for altars a couple of months beforehand, and probably have other volunteer opportunities.
