Too uptight?

I participated in the SF Mission event for the first time, and had a good time. I especially liked the alters on display in the park. Here it comes - what I didn't like were the people who just saw it as an opportunity to be like ... "Woo-hoo, a parade, let me dress up to get attention and act like an idiot!" Not that I expected it to be a serious, somber event, but some people just didn't seem to have a clue what it was actually about (it's not about them). Or am I just being too uptight?

Well it's part celebration, part solemn rememberance, part parade...
    Everyone gets what they need...

The thing that really strikes me at this event is the behavior of the SFPD, which i find simultaneously abnoxious and amusing. I am specifically referring to their conduct infront of the Mission Cultural Center. The same sequence of events seems to happen every year -- and it is equally absurd to me every year that it happens.
First, they wait until the absolute last minute to block off Miission St. @ 24th and 25th Streets. There were -- i don't know how many -- hundreds of people waiting on either side of Mission alone (This does not include the procession coming up 25th from Bryant). And they tell us that we can only proceed in the N. bound lanes and the S. bound lanes will remain open to traffic -- sure pal.
So, the Aztec dancers have all filed outside and are waiting while this pig is announcing this to an increasingly aggrovated crowd.
But when there was a break in traffic, the dancers ran out, we all gathered around and the procession was met like clockwork.
Taking up all of Mission and 24th Streets.
Has anyone else found this dynamic recurring and absurd or am i distorting history?
I am almost looking forward to the same interplay happening next year -- as long as we "win" of course.

A few years ago there was this dope in a big, spindly, straw mask who thought it was fun to go around scaring little kids. All of a sudden he got to close to a candle and was on fire - luckily his mask was put out quickly without injury but he was definitely the one who got scared. All I could think of was that one of those little kid's abuelitas was not amused and took care of the problem nicely.
